​It is that time of year again, Flashes! After weeks of classes and activities, you are reaching the near end of the Spring 2025 tunnel. As anyone can imagine, this can feel and be stressful, no matter how much we know the material or how many times we’ve edited that final paper.
Crossing Life's Thresholds
In storytelling, crossing the threshold is essential for character development. It is the protagonist saying “yes” to the journey ahead as they leave their comfort zones to venture off into the unknown. As Bilbo Baggins himself puts it in this same scene from the Fellowship of the Ring, “It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to.”

While the Eastern Roman Empire (or Byzantium) lasted long after Justinian’s reign, he is one of its best-remembered leaders, both in the Julian Dynasty and the line of emperors. Some even argue that he is the best of all 93 emperors, including Emperor Constantine the Great himself (however you feel about that claim, I leave to you).

Still one of my favorite lines in literature to this day. There have been a variety of mentions and adaptations of Dante’s work, from the 2010 video game “Dante’s Inferno” to its influence on other books and media, including the current John Wick franchise. Yet, The Divine Comedy goes beyond violence or spiritual depravity. It is regarded as one of the greatest love stories and poetic writings ever written, as it bridges the gap between the human and the divine. Having recently finished the trilogy, it rings in my mind near-daily.

Amazon's The Lord of the Rings Series Will Premier September 2022
Earlier this morning on August 2, 2021, Amazon Studios published a press release statement on an upcoming and highly anticipated series. Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings series is a new adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s literary work.
